Do We Mean Something?

I read a sad quote recently by Rhode Island House Speaker, Gordon Fox. In an article about an FBI raid and investigation against him, he is quoted in speaking of his success in pushing through gay marriage in the state. The article here states:

“… Fox was instrumental in pushing gay marriage legislation through as the political climate shifted nationally. He became emotional at the bill-signing ceremony on the Statehouse steps last year as he addressed the crowd and talked about his longtime partner, Marcus LaFond, whom he called “the love of my life.”

“This tells me our relationship does matter,” Fox said. “It means that we mean something.”

This is a devastating admission.  Why was the speaker so emotional? Did he win the liberation of millions killed or tortured or enslaved? That would be an emotional moment for a legislator. However, in his statement he revealed personal emptiness and a striving to fill his own personal void. He was searching for worth for himself and his relationship through state legislation. He was searching for Meaning and  Meaning for Gordon Fox is granted by the state. What does this say about the children that state legislation allows to be aborted by the millions? Do they not matter? Do they have no meaning? This is more social justice from the social gospel and I would tell Mr. Fox, that gospel is.a.lie.

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” – Psalm 8:3-4

Meaning and what matters comes from God and God alone. There has been a successful campaign to change the meaning of the word “marriage” and the word “baby” and the word “human” in the mind of the culture, but the meanings of these have not nor will a culture or government ever change them. God is the definer and creator of marriage and human beings and what they mean. He is the definer of gender. In a culture that claims science to be the bearer of truth, in this area and in the area of fetal development or climate, the culture is off the rails. Science has become political.

“This acceptable year of the Lord, a day of such great favour to some, will doubtless be a day of as remarkable vengeance to others. Men’s hearts harden, and their guilt increases apace at such a day as this, if they neglect their souls; and never was there so great danger of such persons being given up to hardness of heart and blindness of mind.”- Jonathan Edwards, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

The days and years will eventually run out for each of us. Blindness of mind is all around us. Information availability is a great blessing when we are tracking down the truth, but we must watch out for the many, many lies. Seek the Lord. Seek what is true. Seek meaning and what matters while it may be found.
